Privacy Blur, a browser extension to hide customer names when you share your screen

Privacy Blur is a free, open-source extension for Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers that blurs the parts of a web page you choose, such as the list of other accounts in the Cloudflare dashboard. It is for people who manage many customers' accounts and share their screen in calls or recordings.

What it does

  1. You write rules: a URL pattern, such as https://dash.cloudflare.com/*, and the CSS selectors of the elements to hide on matching pages.
  2. With blurring on, those elements are blurred on every matching tab, including tabs already open. Changes to the rules apply straight away, without reloading.
  3. Click the toolbar icon or press Alt+Shift+B (Option+Shift+B on a Mac) to turn blurring on or off everywhere. You can make the shortcut work even when the browser is not in focus.
  4. On macOS, an optional helper turns blurring on when screen recording starts and off when it stops.

Rules can be exported and imported, so a team can share one set. The repository includes example rules for the Cloudflare dashboard that blur account and zone names in lists and account switchers.

Who it is for

Partners, consultants and support teams whose user has access to many customers’ accounts at Cloudflare or other providers. When you share your screen with one customer, or record a demo, the others stay hidden.

Getting it

The extension is free and open source, under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. Download it from GitHub and load it in Chrome or Edge from the extensions page with developer mode on; the README covers the macOS and Windows setup. Frequently asked questions

How do I hide other customers' accounts in the Cloudflare dashboard when I share my screen?

Install Privacy Blur in Chrome or Edge and import the example rules from its repository. They blur account and zone names in the dashboard's account lists and switchers. Turn blurring on with the toolbar icon or Alt+Shift+B before you start sharing.

Does Privacy Blur only work with Cloudflare?

No. Each rule is a URL pattern and a list of CSS selectors, so it can blur elements on any website, such as the account list of another cloud provider's console or a column in a web application. The Cloudflare rules are an example to start from.

Can Privacy Blur turn on automatically when I record my screen?

On macOS, yes. An optional helper detects when screen recording starts and stops and switches blurring on and off with it. On Windows you turn it on by hand with the toolbar icon or the keyboard shortcut.

Is Privacy Blur free?

Yes. The source code is on GitHub under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. You load it in the browser from the repository; it is not published in the Chrome Web Store.
